Proofreading is the final step in the editing process, where you correct for typos, spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes. If you don't proofread, you risk letting errors into your work that ruin your credibility and all the hard work you put into your essay. This won't work during a timed test, of course, in which case you should still use the strategies that follow without taking a break. But if you can stop looking at your essay for a bit, you should.
